Frequently asked questions at Horse Nannies

Questions from the Facebook Page
Do people looking for a stable away have to join in order to find listings?
Yes, at this stage joining gives you access to all sections, including Stable Away. The reason it is designed in this manner is because the website is still new but growing. Every day, new people and properties are coming on board so if the property you are looking for is not listed, we can email you when what you require becomes available. Once the database is large enough, this will no longer be necessary and we will change to a search function prior to joining. Please note, membership is currently free for six months and there are no catches - i.e. we do not ask for credit card details. I hope that helps.

How do I know if there is a Horse Nanny position in my area?
We will email you when any positions come up within your region. Please remember to put us on your contact list so the emails are not sent to your Junk Folder.

Are you in the U.K.?
We will eventually be operating in all countries, but currently are concentrating on the U.S., U.K., Europe and Australia.

How are the "nannies" vetted? Skill, knowledge wise and who handles the care, custody and control insurance needs?
It works the same as other Pet Sit/Home sit websites. We strongly recommend you ask a potential Horse Nanny for a Police Check (Federal Background Check) and ask for references from Equestrian professionals, such as coaches, clubs, farriers, etc. Our Useful Tools has downloadable forms to help make the right decision. The website does have a star system, however that is only relevant when the sitter has done assignments through Horse Nannies. Personal Accident insurance is something we will look at in the future but for now, this is something both horse sitters and horse owners will need to look into.

Why would I agree to be charged $12.00 a month 6 months from now just to see if there is anyone in the Spokane area? I am curious, but not going to give out my info for potential mass marketing. Or agree to a billing when there may not be anyone in my area... just first click impression.
You do not need to agree to be charged $12 a month - there are no catches to the free period and we are not asking for credit card details. We also are not using individuals information for marketing. What we will do is target our advertisers at regions where we see a gap or need. Hope this helps. :)

I have seen this so many times, it's tempting. But I don't know if it's a weird scam or something.
No, its not a scam and absolutely free to join for the first six months. We do not ask for your credit card details so you have nothing to lose. You can look around the site and decide if its for you.

How do I find a horse nanny for my area and what are the background checks and qualifications that you use so that I know you are recommending qualified, competent, and trustworthy people to care for my animals?
We are not a recruitment agency. The website works in a similar way to House/Pet sitting sites, however specialising in the care of horses. We strongly suggest anyone engaging a horse sitter to request a Police Checks (Federal Check) and references from horse professionals such as Coaches, Clubs, farriers, etc. We have downloadable forms and tools to help you make the right decision. We also have a star system, however that is only relevant to people who have horse sat previously via a Horse Nannies connection. Thank you for the question and please feel free to ask more.

If we need to do all the investigating background checks and referrals, what do you get paid for???
Once the 6 month free period is over, the membership fee is as low as $12 per month with no limits on contacts. Three, 6 and 12 month options are available. This is less than comparable pet sitting sites. Unfortunately, producing, running and administering the website is expensive. We also intend adding more services and features in the future. Please feel free to explore the website whilst it is currently free.

Horse Nanny FAQs
Can Horse Nannies International suggest a reasonable pay rate for my Nanny?
As every situation, district and country will have different rates and expectations, Horse Nannies International does not offer any advice in this regard.

You can read more about pay rates here: Paying a Horse Nanny

Why use a Horse Nanny rather than agisting or boarding my horse/s?
Horses are much happier and usually safer when in their own environment. Keeping your horse at home means his pasture and routine need not be changed.

Why be an Urgent Care Nanny?
As an experienced horse person, you may be prepared to look after horses at short notice for a fee. These Urgent Care situations can bring extra income whilst not requiring the longer term commitment of regular Horse Nanny assignments. Being an Urgent Care Nanny can work very well for people employed full time and especially suited to people working in related professions such as Vet Nurses, Farriers and Equestrian Coaches.

Why use an Urgent Care Nanny?
Due to unforeseen circumstances, there will be times when your regular Horse Nanny or Carer can not attend your horse. If you have nominated an Urgent Care Nanny, your horse will not be left unattended.

How much should I charge?
As ever situation and property is different, we do not offer advise in this regard, however you may find the answer by researching farm stays and camping facilities within your area.

Why use a Horse Nanny rather than ask a friend or neighbour to care for my horse?
A friend or neighbour may not have the necessary horse skills to adequately care for your horse or they maybe unavailable or unwilling to commit the time required to attend to your horse/s.

Why would someone want to be a Horse Nanny?
Horse people often have a strong equine interest and would prefer to work with horses rather than cats or dogs. They may also wish to use their skills to earn extra money for their own horse expenses. Alternatively, they may need to meet another horse person they can reciprocate horse caring duties with when needed. In some cases, horse people no longer have their own horse and want to be around horses again.

Why not use a regular house sitter?
Horses are large and unpredictable animals and should only be handled by experienced horse people. Regular pet sitters, without horse knowledge, are not only likely to place themselves in danger but may also miss warning signs your horse is unwell or has had a behavioural change.

Why be a Horse Nanny?
Being a Horse Nanny can be an enjoyable way to earn extra income to supplement your own horse expenses. Or maybe you no longer have your own horse and would like to be around horses again. Another reason could be you wish to set up an arrangement to reciprocate horse caring duties with another horse person when the need arises.

Stable Away FAQs
As a stable owner and frequent boarder for weary travellers as well as a traveller myself, I am wondering if there is any checks and balances for qualified care and clean, safe overnight facilities?
We have a star system and the option for Federal Checks which will enable a person or facility to be verified, much the same as Air BnB or Trusted House Sitters web sites. However, as the service is still fairly new, the star system is not reliable as there are not enough reviews at this point. We did considered insisting on Federal/Police checks, however this would have meant a cost to members and we are at present offering the service free. If you have any suggestions, we are very happy to look at implementing changes. As Horse Nannies is constantly evolving, I am very happy to listen to anything you think may improve the functionality of the site.

Can I offer long term agistment / boarding?
What facilities or length of time you offer is entirely up to you and what you feel suits your lifestyle and property.

Can I find long term accommodation for my horse through Stable Away?
Both long and short term accommodation is offered. Stable Away hosts can offer any length of accommodation they feels suits their lifestyle and property.

How much do Stable Away properties charge?
Every situation and property will be different and depends on what is offered. Make sure you negotiate your costs before arriving to avoid misunderstandings.

Why use a Stable Away property?
Long distance travelling with horses is tiring and stressful. Being able to choose your route and find horse friendly accommodation along the way, makes travel more pleasant for both you and your horse/s.

Why offer a Stable Away?
Property maintenance is an on-going cost, so making that spare paddock or stable available to paying horse travellers is a great way to help pay the bills.

I was interested in joining horse nannies to find horse care for summer weekends on a regular basis. I was going to join as a Foundation Member but I'm not interested in having any personal information posted at this time. I would just like to join and be able to find people in my area. My assumption is that all the info you're asking for on the membership form creates a profile that is posted/public. Is this correct? Is there any way to simply be a member and not have personal info posted?
Yes, you can hide your information by simply turning off your profile. You are still able to use the rest of the site as normal (i.e. contact people), however your posts won't be visible. You can turn off the profile and/or posts at any time. I hope that helps and we looking forward to you joining as a Foundation Members.
